Self Love Before Romantic Love

In many of our blog entires, we’ve discussed just how vital it is simply to be yourself in a relationship. Now, we’d like to further talk about how to stay true to yourself. We asked three anonymous Holton girls to share their takes on three different questions. 

 

1. Why is self-confidence so important in relationships?

 

Holly #1: You can’t love someone else before you love yourself.

 

Holly #2: If someone does not have enough self-confidence, he/she would probably be unable to demand as much respect from the partner as he/she deserves. 

 

Holly #3: If you do not love yourself, then how are you supposed to be able to love another individual? Once you learn to genuinely love yourself, it is proven that you are more likely to find someone you truly love and someone who can treat you right. 

 

2. What are ways to boost your self-esteem?

 

Holly #1: Do something kind for others — volunteering, including someone who might feel left out or even writing letters of gratitude! It always makes you feel good about yourself when you give instead of take. 

 

Holly #2: Meditate. Do your makeup. Put something nice on and go out for dinner or something. Hang out with your friends. Look really cute, and take some pictures. Go slap on some face mask. 

 

Holly #3: Eat brain foods — blueberries, pomegranate juice and dark chocolate! Work out more regularly, mediate or do yoga. If you feel good on the inside, then you’ll start to see yourself in a more positive light on the outside as well. 

 

3. How can relationships negatively affect your self-esteem?

 

Holly #1: if something bad happens in a relationship, one might blame herself in the situation.

 

Holly #2: I personally have never been in a relationship, but I think that self-esteem can hurt a relationship when you know your significant other makes off-hand comments about one’s appearance or personality.

 

Holly #3: If you are in a relationship that is even mildly abusive, your self-esteem will diminish.

 

Studies in psychology have proven that when you have low self-esteem, you are drawn to those who think the same of you. This could result in a person tolerating poor treatment from another individual. Before you focus all of your energy and affection on somebody else, spend time on yourself because at the end of the day, vivacious self-confidence will outlive any relationship. It is important to remember that you should never change yourself for another being. Always stay true to yourself. No matter what.
